Vikings stadium saga delayed at State Capitol

Republican House Speaker Kurt Zellers told MPR there wasn’t a vote on the Vikings stadium bill Saturday because, “We’re going to wait for the authors and the advocates to say ‘we believe we have all of our votes now.’ Until then it’s too early.”

The announcement came shortly after Gov. Mark Dayton and Democratic leadership held a news conference Saturday to push the House to hold a vote on the Vikings stadium proposal. Vikings fans, sporting purple and gold, also rallied at the State Capitol Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Senate Tax Committee approved the stadium bill by a single vote Friday night after more than five hours of debate.

Before sending the proposal to the full Senate, the committee removed the racino provision from the measure. Senators could vote on the bill as soon as Sunday.

Saturday Rep. Zellers suggested he’s willing to hold the session open longer than Monday’s self-imposed deadline, “If we need to make a little extra time for some of the shenanigans that these folks are going to plan, we’ll do that because it’s more important to do the right thing for Minnesotans.”
