Immigrants in Minnesota cheer Obama announcement

Hundreds of illegal immigrants in Minnesota would be affected by President Barack Obama’s announcement Friday that young immigrants will get a chance to stay in the United States and work under a new policy, the Star Tribune says. Obama’s action removes the threat of deportation for as many as 800,000 immigrants nationally who are under 30 and came to the United States as children, the paper reports.

It was welcome news for some illegal immigrants who have built their lives in Minnesota but lived in fear that they could be deported.

MPR talked to one of them, a 21-year-old University of Minnesota computer science student.

KARE 11 talked with another, a gleeful 20-year-old South St. Paul resident from El Salvador.

Critics in Congress included Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., who said the policy rewards immigrants for breaking U.S. law.
