Minneapolis Police Friday announced that two juveniles were arrested in Brooklyn Center Thursday night in connection with the shooting death of 5-year-old Nizzel Anthony George. Although their names were not revealed, the Star Tribune identified the suspects as two teen boys.
KARE 11 spoke with the boy’s family at their north Minneapolis home. Tensions in the neighborhood are running high:
The boy’s mother is frustrated she hasn’t been told more about the teens who were arrested, she told WCCO:
George was shot at his grandmother’s home in Minneapolis Tuesday when someone fired a reported 10 shots into the living room of the residence.
Family and friends are still mourning the death of the boy, who was known to loved ones as “Stewie.” KARE-TV reported that the anti-violence group Mad Dads announced a vigil for the boy will be held Saturday afternoon.
Gun violence has been a more high-profile problem in the Twin Cities this year. A Pioneer Press analysis of St. Paul Police Data found that in the first five months of this year, two types of gun violence reports were up 65 percent, compared with the average for the same period between 2008 and 2010.
Meanwhile in downtown Minneapolis, charges were filed against two men for a shooting that wounded three bystanders outside the Gay 90s. Police are beefing up patrols around bar-closing time, the Star Tribune reported.
