Peavey Plaza closed as city seeks homeless solutions; arrests up 300%

Troubled Peavey Plaza in downtown Minneapolis will be temporarily closed for cleaning and maintenance starting Tuesday, and Minneapolis police are working with several shelters to help homeless people who call the plaza home, Fox 9 reports.

Emergency calls to Peavey Plaza are up 260 percent from last year, according to city crime statistics, Fox 9 says.

Arrests are up 300 percent in the plaza, WCCO reports.

Peavey Plaza has been the center of controversy this year as the city prepares to demolish and rebuild the plaza.

Preservationists say its demolition would be a great loss and have fought to save it.

The plaza has been a camp site for the Occupy movement, but police say it’s mostly homeless people staying there now. Here’s a look at the plaza and a brief interview with a resident from April.
