Republicans open fire on Bachmann; Boehner calls her claims ‘dangerous’

Rep. Michele Bachmann continues to take flak for her comments for that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated the U.S. government, the Pioneer Press reports.

Bachmann has specifically called into question Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

On Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner was asked about Bachmann’s controversial assertions at a press conference. He said, “I don’t know Huma, but from everything I do know of her, she has a sterling character. And I think accusations like this being thrown around are pretty dangerous.” The clip:

Boehner was not prepared to comment on whether Bachmann should be removed from the House Intelligence Committee.

Among those most critical of Bachmann’s have been Republicans. Even her own former campaign manager, Ed Rollins, is saying that her views are extreme, and in an opinion piece said her claims are “downright vicious” and demanded an apology.

Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., was critical of Bachmann on Twitter. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., also distanced himself from Bachmann, Salon reports.

On Wednesday, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was highly critical of Bachmann’s charges, although he did not mention her by name in a Wednesday speech on the Senate floor. McCain said he had worked with Abedin for years and knows her as an “intelligent, upstanding, hardworking and loyal servant” of the country. McCain called Bachmann’s claims “scurrilous.”

Bachmann was not relenting late Wednesday, saying, “I encourage everyone, including media outlets, to read [the letters] in their entirety. The intention of the letters was to outline the serious national security concerns I had and ask for answers to questions regarding the Muslim Brotherhood and other radical group’s access to top Obama administration officials.”

Bachmann is not backing down, CBS reports:
