St. Paul police chief suspends crime lab drug testing

Drug testing is being halted temporarily in the St. Paul Police Department crime lab after a court hearing this week, when two crime lab workers and the director of the lab said the lab does not follow any written procedures for drug testing and does not document most of the steps they take when testing evidence for illegal drugs, MPR reports.

A major overhaul of the lab is planned, the Star Tribune says.

The lab’s biggest customers – the Minnesota State Patrol, as well as Washington and Dakota counties – said Wednesday that they were taking their business elsewhere, the Pioneer Press reports.
