Fickle drought strikes parts of Minnesota, spares others

Minnesota has been partially spared the drought conditions plaguing much of the Midwest. But some pockets have been left sun-baked and dry, especially in southwest and northwest parts of Minnesota, which are under a severe drought, KSTP reports. Those areas are still living off moisture from rains that fell in May and June, and haven’t had rain in weeks.

A Department of Natural Resources color map show the fast-drying western half of the state. The State Climatology Office has more maps that show just how much this year departs from normal.

In the Northland, where the problem had been too much rain, regions are now parched, WDIO says.

Ranchers and cattlemen around the nation see Minnesota as an oasis in the desert when it comes to hay, and they are buying up the state’s supply, KARE 11 reports:
