Fargo Forum changes its policy on marriage notices

Editor Matt Von Pinnon wrote in his column, “Starting today, The Forum will accept for publication the announcements of gay marriages, engagements and anniversaries if the marriage takes place in a state or country where it’s legally recognized.”

The newspaper was criticized last week after it refused to publish the marriage announcement of two Fargo women who plan to get married in New York next month.

Allison Johnson and Kelsey Smith sat down with Forum Editor Pinnon last week. Watch below:

The couple told Valley News Live they simply wanted to announce their love and their upcoming wedding.

Pinnon added the Forum “will not publish announcements for non-legally recognized marriages, such as civil unions and commitment ceremonies.”

Niether Minnesota or North Dakota recognizes gay marriages legally performed in other states. This fall, voters will decide whether to approve a controversial constitutional amendment that seeks to define marriage in Minnesota solely between one man and one woman.
