C. About 1,000 people attended the first Bayfront Blues Festival in 1989. Ten years later the event had grown so much that organizers felt compelled to look back on its history.
The fans at that first festival enjoyed performers including Luther Allison, Lamont Cranston, Paul Metsa, and the Solid Senders. That audience – like every crowd in the festival’s history – also heard from Big Walter Smith and the Groove Merchants. That streak ends this year, though. The Merchants will be on hand next week to help pay tribute to Big Walter, who died July 24th at the age of 82.
Other performers this year include Elvin Bishop, The Royal Southern Brotherhood, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
