Two-year-old Jacob Xiong was shot in the head by another child at a St. Paul home in the 1300 block of Beech Street, but he is expected to survive, the Star Tribune reports. Investigators called the shooting an accident.
“He’s a trouper,” St. Paul Police Sgt. Paul Paulos told the newspaper. “They do think he’s going to make it.”
Initially, the boy’s 16-year-old sister, who was baby-sitting, didn’t realize his injury was from a gunshot wound, police said, the Pioneer Press reports.
The boy was initially taken to Regions Hospital, but transfered to Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, the Pioneer Press says. Media images showed police carrying rifle cases out of the home. Vang Lue Xiong, an uncle of Jacob Xiong, told the Pioneer Press, “I don’t like gun at home. As a soldier in Laos, I only take guns to fight the enemy. Now, no enemy.”
The child’s grandfather emigrated from Laos after the Vietnam war, looking to start a new life, safe from war, WCCO reports.
“I scared he die,” he said. “I love him.”
