Pawlenty faces old tax return scrutiny

The scrutiny Tim Pawlenty faces as a potential running mate for GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney has cast a new spotlight on an old episode, the British daily The Guardian asserts.

The original story itself isn’t new. It broke in 2003.

But it is getting new attention from critics.

Democrats have been digging into a web of allegations from nine years ago which involved Pawlenty’s use of a shell corporation to shield $60,000 in payments from a telecommunications group during his election campaign that were not declared to the state’s campaign finance board, the Guardian says.

It further explains how payments worked in a separate report.

MinnPost reports that political opponents have been busy digging into the past of Pawlenty, who is generally considered a relatively scandal-free, safe choice for Romney.
