7 dead after shooting at Sikh temple in Wisconsin

An unidentified gunman killed six people at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee on Sunday in a rampage that left terrified congregants hiding in closets and others texting friends outside for help. The suspect was killed outside the temple in a shootout with police officers, the Associated Press reports.

Minnesota is home to about 500 Sikh families, KARE 11 reports. Half of them worship in Bloomington, home to the state’s only Sikh temple, where worshippers on Sunday expressed despair and disbelief.

The Sikh Society of Minnesota is not planning to increase security at its place of worship in Bloomington, KSTP says. Instead, the Society says it will use the opportunity to educate people about their beliefs. Followers of the religion believe in karma and reincarnation and becoming one with God.

The Minnesota Muslim community came out strongly in support of the Sikh community. The Indian American Muslim Council (Minnesota chapter) and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) sent out press releases expressing solidarity with Sikh Americans.
