Mich. philanthropist donates $325,000 to fight Minn. marriage amendment

A Michigan philanthropist has donated $325,000 to a group opposing a proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage in Minnesota, the Star Tribune reports. Jon Stryker of Kalamazoo, Mich., gave the money to Freedom to Marry Minnesota’s political action committee on Tuesday, according to state campaign finance records.

The donation was made one day after the Washington, D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign announcement that it is dumping $1 million into ballot fights over gay marriage in four states, Minnesota among them, the Associated Press reports. The states will split the money equally.

It was not immediately clear exactly which group or groups would receive the Human Rights Campaign money in Minnesota or how the money would be spent.

Freedom to Marry is a coalition partner of Minnesotans United for All Families a leading opponent of the ballot measure.

If approved, the measure would create an amendment to the state constitution that would define marriage as between one man and one woman. The group Minnesota for Marriage is a leading group lobbying in support of the measure.

A recent report indicates the anti-amendment group is winning the money race, but a recent poll suggests a majority of state residents approve of the measure.
