House speaker calls for resignation of Minnesota lawmaker in sex tryst

Minnesota Speaker of the House Kurt Zellers (R-Maple Grove) is calling for the resignation of state Rep. Kerry Gauthier (D-Duluth) following an incident at a rest stop last month, reports WDIO.com.

Police said that Gauthier admitted to placing an ad on Craigslist.com, where he met a 17-year-old boy. The  boy told authorities that he responded to the ad and met Gauthier, and that they allegedly had oral sex. Authorities said on Thursday that since the sex was consensual and no money was exchanged, they declined to file charges.

On Friday, Zellers said Gauthier should resign because his “actions are not becoming of a member of the House of Representatives.”

The Duluth News Tribune reported Wednesday that Gauthier was being investigated for the incident, which took place July 22 near the Thompson Hill rest area off Interstate 35 near Proctor. The same paper reported early Saturday morning that the Duluth City Councilor Jay Fosle would challenge Gauthier in the next house election.

Gauthier, 56, is serving his first term in the Minnesota House of Representatives, according to his House bio. The Duluth District 7B lawmaker was elected to his position in 2010.
