Man shot by police at Woodbury motel was unarmed hostage

More details came to light Saturday in the shooting death of a man at a Woodbury motel early Friday.

The Star Tribune reports that the 19-year-old man shot by Woodbury police was one of the eight hostages allegedly held by Demetrius S. Ballinger, the man accused of several offenses at the Red Roof Inn during a four-hour standoff with police.

According to police, Mark Eric Henderson of St. Paul was shot by officers as he emerged from the motel room, walked toward them and did not comply with their commands. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed that Henderson was not armed.

According to the Pioneer Press, witnesses told Henderson’s mother that her son was attempting to escape from the room and Ballinger fired at his back.

The Oakdale Patch reported Henderson died of multiple gunshot wounds at Regions Hospital.

Police said Ballinger, 25, of Maplewood, is expected to be charged Tuesday with aggravated robbery, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping.
