Labor Day: Holiday signals last day of State Fair, end of summer, day of play

Apart from it being the last day before many many schools resume in the state, Labor Day also traditionally signals the last day of the Minnesota State Fair.

The Fridley Patch reports that many merchandise and food vendors are offering last chance bargains as the Great Minnesota Get-Together winds down for another year.

Looking ahead, popular food vendor Sweet Martha has cooked up a sweet contest with Minnesota-based “Bizarre Foods” host Andrew Zimmern, KSTP-TV reports. The top prize in the giveaway is a year’s supply of Martha’s cookies.

For some, Labor Day weekend means a tradition of camping and fishing in different parts of the state. The Rochester Post-Bulletin looks at the rebound of Whitewater State Park, which is recovering from a downturn in attendance in recent years.

As for those who plan on festivities outside of the fair, the Minnesota State Patrol is reminding motorists who are drinking to “have a plan” for a sober ride, KARE-TV reports, as the state’s crackdown on drunken driving is still in effect.

Originally intended as a rallying point for workers, Labor Day has turned into a day of play for many. The Star Tribune examines how the holiday has changed over the past 100 years in Minnesota.

See the video below for the origins of the holiday, as chronicled by cable’s History channel.
