Rybak: Obama delivered for the middle class

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak was among the Democratic party’s early supporters of the Barack Obama presidential campaign. That may be one reason Rybak was allotted some podium time at the party convention in Charlotte, N.C.

And when his time arrived, Rybak opened his remarks by reminiscing about an early campaign trip to Iowa on Obama’s behalf:

Rybak is among a handful of mayors in prominent positions at the Democratic gathering. He tells U.S. News that as political gridlock has limited what the federal and state governments can accomplish, it’s fallen to mayors to become problem solvers.

Minnesota has more than 100 delegates at the convention. What inspires them to sink so much of their time and money into the effort? The Pioneer Press collected some of their answers to that question.

On the convention’s opening day, delegates approved a platform that endorses same-sex marriage. The Minneapolis delegate who leads the caucus on gay rights issues sees the platform as a boost to those working to defeat Minnesota’s proposed Constitutional amendment that would define marriage as an opposite sex union.
