St. Paul Saints get $25M for downtown stadium

Gov. Mark Dayton on Thursday announced that the St. Paul Saints would get $25 million for a $54 million stadium downtown to replace the aging Midway Stadium, the Star Tribune reports.

The Saints were giddy at the news. Proponents say it’ll give downtown St. Paul a boost. It’s economic impact was in question, according to one analysis, MPR reported.

The project was the biggest recipient of money from a pot of $47.5 million in state economic development grants. The competition for the cash was fierce, and only nine of the 90 applicants seeking a total of $288 million were awarded money, the Star Tribune reports.

MPR has a list of the cities that will get a slice of the pie.

The State Department of Employment and Economic Development estimates the nine projects will employ about 2,000 people, MPR says.

Duluth will be getting $8.5 million for a new parking ramp and office tower, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

The Metropolitan Council was awarded $2 million for the 15-mile Minneapolis-to-Eden Prairie Southwest Light Rail Transit Line.
