NHL lockout has St. Paul business owners concerned

The NHL lockout has some St. Paul business owners concerned about their bottom lines, KSTP reports. Former player and now restaurant owner Tom Reid tells KARE 11 that losing the hockey season would be a big blow to businesses near the Xcel. Reid says hockey fans account for about 30 percent of his business.

The league locked out its players after a collective bargaining agreement was not reached by Saturday’s midnight deadline.

Minnesota Wild defensemen Jared Spurgeon is one of several NHL players signing on to play in Europe during the lockout, according to USA TODAY.

WCCO-TV reports former general manager of the North Stars, Lou Nanne, says the lockout could have been avoided if both sides would have started negotiating earlier.

Nanne thinks the lockout could end soon and compares the negotiations to the NFL and NBA, which was settled in a 50-50 settlement.
