Group against marriage amendment airs first TV ad

The first television ad sponsored by Minnesotans United for All Families against the marriage amendment (below) has been released online and will begin airing on TV in the Twin Cities and Duluth on Tuesday, the Pioneer Press reports.

Minnesotans United for All Families is spending $255,000 to air the ad on six Twin Cities TV stations for a week, the newspaper says.

The 30-second spot features a Catholic, Republican couple from Savage, John and Kim Carny. They say they hadn’t thought much about the issue until they got to know their neighbors, a lesbian couple.

It’s the first ad opposed to the amendment sponsored by a state group. A national group, Freedom to Marry, unveiled a TV ad in August, MinnPost noted.

The leading group backing the amendment, Minnesota for Marriage, plans to air its own TV ads beginning Oct. 1. Amendment supporters rallied Tuesday at the state Capitol, at an event with Catholic archbishop John Nienstedt and other Christian clergy discussing why the church supports the amendment, the Pioneer Press reports. Nienstedt said the vote was not intended to be hurtful or discriminatory, MPR reports.

Here’s a video Minnesota for Marriage released earlier this month, in which some clergy take a stand for the amendment:
