Jury finds Freeport farmer not guilty in raw milk trial

A Stearns County farmer charged with three misdemeanors for distributing unpasteurized milk was found not guilty by a Hennepin County jury Thursday, the Star Tribune reports.

Alvin Schlangen, an organic egg farmer, of Freeport was accused of violating the state’s food safety laws after delivering milk from an Amish farm to Twin Cities’ customers through his private co-op.

The case has drawn some widespread attention because of the divide in the nation between raw milk and free choice advocates and officials who say unpasteurized milk can carry dangerous pathogens, the St. Cloud Times said.
