City Pages to dump Backpage.com ads

A new group that is buying the Village Voice and its affiliated free arts weekly newspapers, including City Pages in the Twin Cities, plans to jettison the online classified site Backpage.com, the Star Tribune reports. The listings have created controversy because critics say it is a marketplace for the illegal sex industry. Backpage.com ads filter to City Pages’ online classified advertising section.

City Pages has been under fire for carrying the ads. Among those that kept the heat on Village Voice is the New York-based site Villagevoicepimp.com.

Advertisers – including a number of Twin Cities entertainment venues – have been in a quandary over the issue because they reach their audience through City Pages, the Star Tribune recently reported.

Minneapolis has tied at least 20 cases of exploited minors to Backpage.com.

The Minneapolis City Council joined St. Paul’s in calling on Village Voice Media to stop the adult ads.
