Operators at Wild Mountain in Chisago County said Oct. 7 is the earliest start on record. A cold start to October created the right conditions for the hill in Taylors Falls for snow-making, the Associated Press reports. Water slides there were running just two weeks ago, the AP says.
Wild Mountain had already said Sunday would be the final day for its summer alpine slide and go-cart operation, KARE 11 reported, so they decided to have the seasons collide. Co-owner Amy Frischmon told KARE that Wild Mountain may be the first ski hill to open in America.

Spring freezes and a historic drought taken some of the charm out of rustic fall destinations, leaving some corn too short to make mazes, apple-less orchards and muted fall color on the trees, the AP reports.
