Forest Lake couple found dead in BWCA had experience outdoors

The Forest Lake couple found dead in the Boundary Waters Sunday were “experienced canoeists,” the Pioneer Press reports.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office says the bodies of 55-year-old Thomas Pineault and 51-year-old Cynthia Pineault were found in Alton Lake wearing life jackets near an overturned canoe. The newspaper says canoeists from a Chicago church group discovered the bodies and alerted authorities.

The couple’s son, Nathan Pineault, tells the Pioneer Press that his parents were passionate about the outdoors and very experienced canoeists. The two would travel to the Boundary Waters for multiple weeks at at time, several times a year.

Wind gusts reached up to 35 mph Friday and can be hazardous for paddling while the water temperature was around 50 degrees.
