Wellstone’s legacy continues 10 years after plane crash

Hundreds of people filled an auditorium at Macalester College Wednesday evening to remember U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, who was killed in a plane crash almost 10 years ago, MPR News says.

Wellstone and seven others were killed in the crash over Eveleth, Minn. on Oct 25, 2002.

Gov. Mark Dayton says Wellstone could have been a presidential contender, MPR reports. “People throughout the country were urging him to run for president. Had he lived, who knows. I personally believe, without any evidence, that he would’ve felt duty-bound to try,” Dayton said.

A supporter from St. Louis Park tells KSTP that Wellstone is remembered as someone who inspired others. “He taught them to care, and he taught them to make a difference. And what better thing can you leave as a legacy than to make a difference,” Elaine Savick said.

The politician’s message lives on at the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center in St. Paul that houses several non-profits with a mission to give back to the community.

Wellstone Action is another organization that aims to carry on Wellstone’s legacy. In an interview with FOX9, Executive Director Ben Goldfarb says the group teaches progressives to practice the “Wellstone way of doing politics.”

A 10th anniversary remembrance event is scheduled for Oct. 25 in Eveleth.
