SPCO, musicians debate ‘play and talk’

The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and its musicians have been negotiating a new contract without success, and now they are negotiating how to negotiate, MPR reports. The two sides are haggling over whether to continue a “play and talk” approach in which performances would continue as they settle the dispute.

Both the SPCO and the Minnesota Orchestra are slogging through difficult contract talks. The Minneapolis group is planning to perform Oct. 19 even amid a lockout.

Orchestras nationwide are finding it difficult to pay the bills, the Washington Post recently reported.
