Police report details relationship between Shattuck-St. Mary’s teacher and student

More details were released by police that describe the two-year relationship between a Shattuck-St. Mary’s teacher that later committed suicide and a foreign exchange student stemming back to 2006.

In a police report obtained by MPR News, Leonard R. Jones, at the time 34 years old, and a 15-year-old sophomore exchange student from Korea began a seeing each other while Jones and his wife were having marital problems.

Jones, a dorm director and lacrosse coach, would meet the student in her room four or five times a week for sex until rumors began around school.

In the report, Jones wife told police her husband was having suicidal thoughts in October of 2008, a few months before the couple began living apart.

The student eventually told school officials about the relationship after she was confronted about where she was over a 10-day Thanksgiving break when she’d been staying with Jones. When the school confronted Jones, he shot himself with a shotgun in his apartment.

The detailed report was also obtained by FOX9. Faribault police tell the television station that if school officials had contacted police instead of trying to confront him themselves, he may not have had the opportunity to kill himself.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s says it was following its plan to investigate a notify police.

In an interview prior to the release of the police report, Jones’ widow, Stefanie Tschirhart-Baldwin tells FOX9 the school mishandled her husband’s case:
