Hockey dad gets 6 months jail time following assault on coach

A St. Paul hockey dad was sentenced to 180 days in jail Tuesday after an assault on his son’s hockey coach late last year in Inver Grove Heights, FOX9 reports. Fifty-year-old Thomas Angelo Tonda will also perform 350 hours of community service and 50 days of sentence to serve work.

According to investigators, Tonda’s 12-year-old son got into a fight with another player during practice last December. After the assistant coach broke up the fight and scolded the players involved, Tonda verbally assaulted the coach and put him in a choke hold.

The Star Tribune reports Tonda was remorseful in court Tuesday. “I’m extremely sorry about what happened,” he said. “I let the association down. I let the kids down. I let my son down.”

Tonda pleaded guilty to one felony count of making terroristic threats. A misdemeanor assault charge was dismissed.

Tonda could have faced more than seven years in prison, the Star Tribune says, because the incident was a violation of his probation from a 2009 conviction for first-degree cocaine possession.
