George McGovern in hospice care, ‘near the end’

Former Sen. George McGovern, D-S.D., long a hero to liberals, who lost to Richard Nixon in the presidential race of 1972, is “nearing the end” in his native South Dakota, his daughter tells the Associated Press. He was moved to a hospice in Sioux Falls Monday.

McGovern, 90, was a prominent leader of the Democrats during the 1960s and ’70s and later turned to a personal passion for fighting world hunger. He helped create the United Nations’ World Food Programme and decades later served as its U.N. Global Ambassador on World Hunger, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. He had been seen as recently as two weeks ago at a South Dakota Symphony Orchestra performance, the newspaper reported.
