MDH: 7 cases of fungal meningitis in Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed Wednesday two new cases of fungal meningitis linked to the national outbreak, increasing the number of patients diagnosed with the potentially deadly infection to seven statewide.

MDH spokesman Buddy Ferguson tells FOX9 that the new cases involve a man in his 50s and a woman in her 40s. Both patients are hospitalized. The other five cases in the state are all women ranging in age from 20s to 70s.

State health officials say that 129 clinics throughout Minnesota purchased drugs from the Massachusetts pharmacy under investigation for making tainted injectables.

On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration expanded the the list of medications made by New England Compounding Center (NECC) that are feared to carry a meningitis risk.

The Centers for Disease Control says there have been 15 deaths in 233 cases across 15 states.
