Marriage amendment supporters warn of gay marriage taught in schools

Minnesota for Marriage, the lead group advocating the marriage amendment, on Thursday unveiled a new television ad that warns that gay relationships could be taught in school if marriage is ultimately redefined to allow for same-sex unions.

“If gay marriage happens here, schools could teach that boys could marry boys,” the spot’s narrator says. The ad features two parents from Massachusetts. “After Massachusetts redefined marriage, local schools taught it to children in second grade, including the school our son attended,” David Parker says in the 30-second spot.

The marriage amendment on the November ballot would amend the state constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. As the Star Tribune notes, same-sex marriage is not legal in Minnesota. But amendment backers say the amendment is necessary so that judges or lawmakers cannot change the law in the future to allow gay marriage.

The ad is misleading, amendment foes argue. They say children learn values at home from parents, the Associated Press reports.
