Charges: Police discover pot-stuffed mattresses headed for St. Paul

A pair of box-spring mattresses allegedly stuffed with 89 pounds of marijuana was discovered Thursday after a traffic stop of an SUV and U-Haul trailer by a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper, the Pioneer Press reported.

According to the charges, the marijuana, which was intercepted east of Rapid City, S.D., was headed to St. Paul.

The Rapid City Journal said a drug-detection dog indicated the smell of marijuana. The alleged substance was found in false compartments within the mattresses.

Another vehicle which reportedly drove suspiciously past the traffic stop was pursued by other troopers and pulled over.

The male driver of the SUV and three other men in the other vehicle — all from California — were charged with drug distribution and possession, the Journal reported.
