North Dakota helps U.S. oil production hit 14-year high

Oil producers in western North Dakota helped boost monthly oil production in the U.S. to the highest level since January 1998, the Grand Forks Herald reports. The Energy Information Agency says that September’s crude oil production reached 6.5 million barrels a day.

Last month, the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources said the state already pumped a record 174 million barrels of oil for the year in September, compared to nearly 153 million barrels last year. The state agency expects to surpass 200 million barrels in 2012.

North Dakota surpassed Alaska to become the No. 2 oil producing state in March.
