Don’t cry: 6,000 gallons of milk spills into SW Minn. creek

Icy road conditions caused a tanker full of milk to rollover south of Interstate 90 near Elkton, about 30 miles southwest of Rochester.

The Austin Daily Herald reports the road was covered with about an inch of ice around 3 a.m. Tuesday before 6,000 gallons of milk poured into Schwerin Creek.

One witness said the mess looked like “a giant milkshake.”

Authorities responded to the scene shortly after 6 a.m. Environmental specialists from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Pollution Control Agency were also called to assess the contaminated water.

The truck driver, Jeremy Drees of rural Elkton, was taken to the hospital to be checked out and was released.

The tanker owned by Mayer Milk Hauling in Stacyville, Iowa is a total loss, the newspaper reports.
