West Fargo gun raffle for youth hockey gains national attention

The West Fargo Hockey Association is raising eyebrows as it moves forward with an annual gun raffle in the midst of a national debate on gun control.

WDAY reports raffle organizer Mike Prochnow has received calls from CNN, CBS Radio and Sports Illustrated, all asking questions about the event aiming to raise close to $100,000 for youth hockey.

Prochnow says the 200 guns were purchased in August, well before the December massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

“I knew it was going to blow up, but I didn’t think it would blow up to this magnitude,” Prochnow said.

Although some admit the timing is not ideal, residents say owning a gun is not unusual in West Fargo.

“Our youth, they start shooting guns at 7 and 8 years old. They go to hunters’ safety,” Tillman Sande told the television station.

The event is so run-of-the-mill, KVLY reports the raffle is your best bet to purchase a firearm during the current shortage (video below).

The raffle’s official rules and terms are listed on the hockey association’s website.
