Officer: Muslim attire was Halloween costume, apologizes for photo

A St. Paul police officer shown dressed up as a female Muslim Target employee issued an apology Tuesday and says the attire, called a hijab, was part of a Halloween costume, the Star Tribune reports.

Officer Robert Buth has worked for the police department since 1999. A company spokeswoman says he also provided off-duty security at a local Target store.

A photo of Buth was posted on Twitter 10 weeks ago, but was brought to the department’s attention Sunday.

“I apologize to anyone who may have been offended by the recently publicized photo which showed me at a private Halloween party on my personal time,” said Buth. “I sincerely regret that the image, which was never intended to become public, may have been viewed to be insensitive to the Muslim community.”

Police spokesman Howie Padilla tells WCCO that Buth remains assigned to the K-9 unit, but FOX9 says it’s unclear if the officer will be disciplined.
