Number of flu-related cases, deaths dropping

There was a steep drop in the number of Minnesotans getting the flu in the week that ended on Feb. 9. It was the sixth week of the winter flu season.

According  to the weekly influenza statistics compiled by the Minnesota Department of Health, the number of flu-related fatalities is also slowing down.

Nine deaths were confirmed during the week of Feb. 3-9. In the previous week, 15 deaths were reported. The total flu-related deaths reported in Minnesota this winter has now reached 136.

The Health Department reports that 72 people were hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza last week. Since the start of the influenza season, 2,703 persons have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza.

This is one of the deadliest flu seasons in several years. There were 33 flu-related deaths in Minnesota last season.
