Coon Rapids man convicted of selling guns in West Africa

A jury found a Coon Rapids man guilty of selling 12 guns in his native Liberia, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

McHarding Degan Galimah, 38, was indicted in August last year, and now has been convicted of one count of smuggling firearms from the United States to Liberia, prosecutors said.

Evidence at trial indicates Galimah bought the guns from a federally licensed firearms dealer, and in November 2010 and July 2011, he exported the guns to Liberia and then went there himself to sell the weapons, prosecutors said. Federal regulations ban such exports.

Galimah faces up to 10 years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not been set.
