Maple Grove native’s ‘Jeopardy!’ winning streak ends

The final answer is, “Drew Horwood is $138,000 richer after eight straight victories on ‘Jeopardy!’”

The Maple Grove native’s winning streak on the TV game show hosted by Alex Trebek came to an end Friday, the Pioneer Press reports.

Despite the loss, Horwood, 23, is still in elite company, as only four contestants have exceeded his feat in the show’s 29 seasons on the air.

Before the show aired Friday, Horwood talked with “KARE 11 News at 4″ host Diana Pierce about his “Jeopardy!” experience, saying the road to show began with an online test, which about 100,000 adults take per year.

“I got lucky enough to do well on the test to be invited for an audition,” Horwood said.

Horwood said his audition was in Chicago and was called a few weeks later, and began taping his episodes in October.

In an interview on the “Jeopardy!” website, Horwood also talked about a certain Minnesota question that would have spelled disaster for him if he got it wrong.

“I was lucky enough to land a question about Prince,” Horwood said. “I doubt I’d have been let back into the state if I got that one wrong.”

The Cargill systems analyst says he plans to use his winnings to pay off his college loans and visit New Zealand — where he hopes to take a trip to see where “The Lord of the Rings” movies were filmed.

See Horwood’s interview with KARE’s Diana Pierce below, where she also puts him to the test with some “Jeopardy!” questions.

Horwood told Pierce that he will take part in the “Jeopardy!” tournament of champions, but noted the event hasn’t been scheduled yet.

Horwood got plenty of hometown support during his “Jeopardy!” run, including shout-outs on Twitter from U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar — whom Horwood interned for while attending the University of Minnesota.

Horwood tweeted about his loss Friday with a bit of humor, as he linked to a YouTube video of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “I Lost on Jeopardy!’”
