Prince wraps up tour of west with high-spirited show in Denver

Prince wrapped up his West Coast tour with a show in Denver Monday night with a 90-minute set that included the music icon’s hits “Purple Rain” and “Let’s Go Crazy,” the Pioneer Press reports.

The Purple One embarked on the tour in April with his new band 3rdEye Girl, playing two nights and four shows in each city they stopped in.

Prince is next off to play the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night in Las Vegas, where he’s been tapped to receive the show’s Icon Award. He then returns to Minnesota to play two shows at the Myth Live Event Center in Maplewood May 25.

Pioneer Press music critic Amy Nelson reviewed the Monday night show in Denver, saying “the Purple Yoda was in high spirits and total control” as he led his band mates “through a light-show spectacular.”

Nelson said the set included a mixture of Prince’s favorites along with some new material by 3rdEye Girl.

The critic also remarked that show “was a remarkable burgeoning of the band that first played together in sparse candlelight during Prince’s six-gig home stand at the Dakota in January.”

Nelson also wrote that Prince playfully joked with the audience about lip-synching a song, and then in an interview after the show blasted lip sync “artists” who have neither the skill nor talent to entertain.
