Duluth runner shocked to learn aches, pains due to pregnancy

Trish Staine is among the many runners who have been training for the Grandma’s half-marathon event in Duluth later this month. She was fit – not gaining any weight. “Her face was even thinner,” her husband John noted. So it came as a shock to the couple that Trish was nearing the end of a pregnancy, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

The two have foster children and two biological children, ages 7 and 11, but this pregnancy was unlike her others – she didn’t have a clue, her husband told the News Tribune. Until Sunday.

That’s when Trish felt back stiffness after running at least nine miles, the newspaper reported. Her pain got worse throughout the day Monday. They suspected a pinched nerve, maybe a kidney stone or perhaps a burst appendix. An ambulance rushed her to the hospital.

When John, who had been stuck in Superior with a health appointment of his own, finally got to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center on Monday, doctors told him “you have a brand new girl,” the News Tribune reported. The baby was born five weeks premature.

Trish Staine said she told the doctors it was impossible news. She said her husband had a vasectomy and she had no signs of pregnancy, including no baby kicks, the Associated Press reported.

Trish Staine still plans to run her June 22 race, KSTP reports. KSTP has video of the mother and her new baby:
