Twists and turns possible in Trevino trial, set to begin Monday

Jeffery Trevino was charged in the death of his wife Kira Steger even before her body was discovered in the Mississippi River. Jury selection in his trial for her disappearance and death is set to begin Monday in Ramsey County District Court. Trevino is charged with two counts of second degree murder.

The Pioneer Press reported that Trevino’s defense attorney John Conard has expressed concern that the jury pool for might be “tainted” by media coverage. Attorneys are expected to vet 50 potential jurors.

Kira Steger, 30, disappeared in February. Investigators discovered blood throughout the house in the St. Paul home that she shared with her husband. Her family has said she was preparing to divorce her husband. Trevino, 39, has pleaded not guilty. Conard has said the marriage was ending because Steger was having an affair.

The Star Tribune has reported that Conard said he’s discovered evidence that contradicts authorities’ description of the scene inside the Trevino home.

Trevino’s trial is expected to run three weeks. Conard said Trevino plans to wear civilian clothing during his trial.
