Fire at a mink farm near Detroit Lakes levels building

A fire just east of Detroit Lakes destroyed a building on a mink farm.

Forum News Service reports that a feed mixing building at the Sonnenberg Mink Farm was believed to have started on fire Friday when a spark or ember presumably landed on a large pile of mink bedding.

Firefighters from many area communities responded to the blaze. Detroit Lakes Fire Chief Dave Baer said their main concern was a 700-gallon tank of phosphoric acid housed close to the building. Firefighters were concerned about that, because phosphoric acid burns very violently.

The fire burned throughout Friday morning and into the early afternoon.

The mink farm houses about 45,000 baby mink along with the farm’s breeding stock.

It is the second time in a week that mink have been in the news. Around 450 mink were released by an animal rights group between either Sunday night or Monday morning, near Grand Meadow in southeastern Minnesota. The farmers were able to recover all but about 75 of the mink.
