Collectors eye Metrodome memorabilia

KSTP reports the pitcher’s mound from the Metrodome is about to be sold to the highest bidder.  It’s been stored in an Arden Hills warehouse where the state auctions off a variety of items.  On Saturday afternoon, the Department of Administration Surplus Services website showed the high bid at $300, with eight hours left to go.

The warehouse must be cleared to make way for more paraphernalia from the Dome.

MPR News reports that the Minnesota Sports  Facilities Authority has received hundreds of requests for mementos. Many are likely to be routed through the state warehouse.

But the MSFA says it is trying to honor special requests.

“We’re just keeping lists of the hundreds of groups and organization, and schools and community groups that want, primarily seats, and some equipment, and turf, pieces of turf,” said Michele Kelm-Helgen, chair of Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority. “We’re going to come out with a process.”

Not all parts of the Metrodome will be demolished.  Some will be incorporated into concourses in a new Vikings facility, according to team spokesman Jeff Anderson.

“We’re currently taking inventory of items, both from a functional perspective as well as from a memorabilia perspective,” Anderson said. “You know, are there any things that we could use inside a new stadium, or are there keepsakes we want to include within that Vikings Hall of Legends, some lockers or seats, some of those items that will have long term meaning to our fans or to the organization?”

KEYC reports that the Minnesota Historical Society is also considering what should be in its collection, including parts of the roof.
