Jason Davis announces end of ‘the Road’ at KSTP

After nearly 38 years with KSTP, road reporter Jason Davis is ending his run at the station.

KSTP announced Monday that the venerable host of “On the Road with Jason Davis” will be retiring on May 30, 2014.

“It’s time to hand it off to somebody else, step aside, retire – call it what you’d like, but it’s time” Davis told KSTP online Monday.

A weekly, 30-minute program, “On the Road” has led Davis and his photographer to more than 35 countries over the years.

Davis’ honors over his 45-year career include the National Television Academy’s Silver Circle award, which is the highest honor given out by the organization. He was also inducted into the Minnesota Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2008.

Davis, 74, told KSTP that he’s not moving on to do other things, he’s simply run “his course” and has “achieved what I needed to achieve.” He said he’s retiring while he has his health and interests.

The journalist said he’s looking forward to traveling with his wife rather than a photographer, and he’s excited about spending more time with relatives in England and Australia.

BringMeTheNews Founder and CEO Rick Kupchella recently interviewed Davis at a Smile Network event in late November.

“It’s been an amazing life,” Davis told Kupchella. “I’m in awe of how lucky I’ve been.”

Davis said of the thousands of stories he’s covered over his broadcasting career, a story about an elderly couple out of Wabasha, Minnesota, is the one he loves most.
