The New York Times spent 36 hours in Minneapolis: Here’s where they went

“Urban authenticity, cultural sophistication, Midwestern friendliness.”

That’s how the New York Times described Minneapolis in a piece for its “36 Hours” travel series, saying “they all add up to the perfect formula for a weekend away.”

The NYT hasn’t exactly been on best terms with Minnesota in recent years – particularly following the “grape salad” gaffe and Honeycrisp apple diss – but looks to be making amends with this glowing review of the state’s biggest city.

So where did the New York Times suggest visitors head? Well the Friday afternoon and Saturday morning was spent in the Warehouse District/North Loop and downtown area, with stops at the Stone Arch Bridge, the Guthrie Theater and happy hour at Spoonriver, before dinner at the acclaimed Bachelor Farmer.

First Avenue, the Swedish American Institute, and the Chain of Lakes get a shout-out, specifically the Lake Harriet Bandshell, with the writer also recommending Lowry Hill Meats, Tilia at Upton Ave S. and 43rd Ave., and the 112 Eatery in downtown.

The Times’ story is a pretty logical guide to spending a weekend in the city, unlike an effort from Vogue that was ripped apart by CityPages for suggesting the Walker Arts Center and the Guthrie Theater were “next door” and failed to note the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is undergoing a massive renovation.
