Hostess unveils Deep Fried Twinkies, a frozen treat that can be baked at home

Deep fried Twinkies are no longer just for the State Fair.

Hostess – creator of Donettes, Ho Hos and Ding Dongs – is taking its most popular creation and commodifying it for the take-and-bake crowd with frozen Twinkies that can be cooked at home.

The Deep Fried Twinkies will be exclusively sold at Walmart for three months starting Aug. 16, before being available at other stores, Walmart announced in a company blog post.

The new Twinkies are battered and partially fried before being boxed up and frozen.

They are meant to be cooked in the oven for six to eight minutes at 350 degrees, The Associated Press says. If cooking six to eight minutes for the savory treat is just too long to wait, they can be deep fried for two-and-a-half to three minutes.

At 220 calories and nine grams of fat, the deep fried frozen variation is almost twice as fatty as a a regular Twinkie, which comes in at 130 calories and four grams of fat, Time reported.

To compare to other treats of choice, a chocolate frosted donut has 290 calories, an Oreo Blizzard from Dairy Queen is 384 calories and the average State Fair corn dog is 375 calories. (A friendly shout out from all doctors and dentists: an average apple is 53 calories).

There are 69 Walmarts in Minnesota to get the snack during the three month exclusivity period, but if you want the real deal and skip the cooking process, Spaghetti Eddie’s will have their own deep fried Twinkies with toppings at the Minnesota State Fair.

But the question remains: delicious treat or horrible monstrosity?
