NFL could suspend 2 Packers if they don’t address PED allegations

The NFL has served notice to the four active players – including two prominent Green Bay Packers – at the center of the league’s PED investigation: If they don’t interview with the league prior to Aug. 25, they will be suspended.

The league sent a letter to the NFL Players Association informing them that it will suspend Packers linebackers Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers, Steelers linebacker James Harrison and free-agent linebacker Mike Neal indefinitely Aug. 26 if they have not cooperated.

Here is a copy of the letter obtained by Tom Pellirsero of the USA Today.

The league would suspend the four players for conduct detrimental, making it separate from any discipline the players would face under the drug policy.

The Al Jazeera documentary named the four players as having received performance-enhancing drugs.

The same documentary also named Peyton Manning – but the NFL already announced that Manning had cooperated with the league’s investigation and that no credible evidence existed that he used or possessed PEDs.

According to Pro Football Talk, the four players and the NFLPA argue that they are not required to participate in the league’s investigation unless the league already has “credible evidence” they used PEDs.

Is this shaping up as the next big battle between the league and the players union? We may soon find out.
