Minneapolis North’s Tyler Johnson will be a ‘big part’ of Gophers’ offense

If you thought Minneapolis North standout Tyler Johnson would redshirt for the Minnesota Gophers this season you’d better think again.

Gophers coach Tracy Claeys says the former North quarterback “will definitely be a part of what [Minnesota] is doing this fall.”

Johnson led North to a state championship appearance in 2015, and as a senior posted some eye-popping stats. He threw the ball for 2,606 yards and 36 touchdowns, while running for 1,100 yards and another 20 touchdowns on the ground.

According to Claeys, he’s been equally impressive since making the transition to receiver for the Gophers.

“He’s done a tremendous job,” said Claeys during his Monday afternoon press conference. “For a true freshman it’s unbelievable.”

Johnson stands about 6-foot-2 and weighs around 185 pounds. Claeys adds that he also has tremendous hands and can jump. Hesays the freshman has added some strength and weight since arriving to campus in June, and Claeys adds he’s not afraid to get after it with the older players in practice.

“I do think AAU basketball has given him a mentality of competing against older kids. He’s been doing that since he’s been playing AAU basketball so it didn’t phase him to get out there go against older kids.”

Here is Claeys’ full press conference. The comments about Johnson occur about the 7:00 mark.
