The United States Soccer Federation has suspended goalkeeper Hope Solo for six months for the comments she made at the Olympic Games in Rio following the U.S. team’s loss to Sweden.
United States soccer president Sunil Gulati said in a press release the suspension is effective immediately.
“The comments by Hope Solo after the match against Sweden during the 2016 Olympics were unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our National Team players.”
After the United States’ loss, Solo said, “I think we played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly believe that.”
Solo believed Sweden would not make it far in the tournament but they ended up picking up a silver medal after losing to Germany in the gold medal match.
Here’s the full quote Solo gave to reporters after the loss. The suspension runs through February of 2017.
This isn’t the first suspension Solo has received. She was suspended for 30 days in 2015 for her conduct in a domestic violence dispute.
